Job Description

The Norfolk Health District is seeking an energetic person to join our Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) team. The Norfolk Health District currently has four satellite offices: Little Creek, Huntersville, Park Place, and Berkley. The district actively engages the community through mobile outreach clinics. This position will be a part of the Little Creek team. The ability to travel between mobile outreach events and clinics is required.
Under the guidance of a Nutritionist or Nutritionist Senior, the Nutritionist Assistant obtains health and diet information from clients and provides low risk nutrition education according to protocols. Obtains clinical tests (hemoglobin or a "finger/heel stick" ) to assess blood iron status. Independently schedules appointments, maintains records, compiles reports, secures and verifies information needed for WIC income eligibility determination. Instructs clients about program guidelines and assists with WIC benefits issuance. Facilitates group nutrition education classes.
The successful applicant will be required to enroll in and complete CPA (Competent Professional Authority) training within 6 months of employment. This training is in addition to new employee training. The training is on-site and during regular work hours. On-site training will include instruction, computer based courses and distant learning courses. Upon completion, the employee will be promoted to Nutritionist Associate. Employee must spend a minimum of 51% of their time engaging in nutrition education activities. Failure to successfully complete the training within 6 months of hire will result in termination of employment.
## Minimum Qualifications
A successful candidate will have experience/ and/or education in nutrition or dietetics. Experience utilizing computer software in a professional setting. Experience with collecting anthropometric data and interpreting results. Good communication skills, written, and oral. Clerical experience working with children. Experience providing one on one counseling and/or group education. Must have a valid driver's license and a vehicle to drive between sites as needed. High school diploma or GED.
## Preferred Qualifications
Excellent computer skills in data entry and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite. Bilingual English/Spanish. Public Health or WIC experience.
## Special Requirements
Valid Virginia driver's license and ability to provide own transportation for local travel.
Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service's Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.
